So the New Year celebrations have come and gone and we are officially in 2017. We are sure plenty of you out there have made New Year’s resolutions that revolve around your careers. Perhaps you want to try something new, or you are angling for a promotion within your current company but need to take a few extra steps to get where you want to go.

Whatever the case may be, it is important that you stay the course to ensure your resolution comes true. Need a little help? Here are a few tips that should help you along the way.

Create A Written Plan

A vague thought about what you want to achieve is all well and good, but it is also easily forgotten once life starts taking over again. If you want to ensure your resolutions stay fresh in the mind you need to get them written down. Record what you want to achieve and create a plan that will get you there. This plan should incorporate important milestones that are essentially the “steps” you need to take to bring your resolution to fruition. For example, you may need to complete a course to move forward in your career, or there may be certain skills that you need to work on.

Create Incentives

With your plan in place, you need to get motivated and the best way to do this is to offer yourself incentives. Look at each of the milestones you have created and try to come up with a suitable reward for reaching each of them. For example, you might head out for a meal or buy yourself a new item of clothing once you have achieved what you set out to do. Not only does this reward your achievement, but it also motivates you to keep pushing towards the next one.

Be Realistic

Let’s back up a moment and go back to the resolutions themselves. Really think about them and whether or not they are actually going to be achievable for you. Realism is not a bad thing, so while you should be ambitious you should also temper yourself. After all, setting yourself an unrealistic target can lead to your motivation getting drained, which means nothing gets achieved at all. If you have a long-term career plan, make sure you understand how long-term it actually is. Don’t expect to achieve in a year what might normally take two or three.

Dealing With Setbacks

It’s unlikely that it is going to be smooth sailing all the way to achieving your resolution and that’s okay. Setbacks happen and the key thing is that you are able to pick yourself up afterward and keep pushing forwards. Don’t allow any barriers to stop you from achieving what you want. Instead, learn from the setback and then put it to the back of your mind. Examine your progress thus far and steel yourself to get back on track to achieving your goals from the next day instead of getting too bogged down in any mistakes or issues.
