The annual Society of Radiographers awards were held recently at the House of Commons. The ceremony, which was attended by many key figures in the radiography profession, recognises high quality practice, innovation within the field and excellent patient care.

The ceremony saw the prestigious Radiographer of the year award being presented, with the honour going to Melanie Mazzei of New Cross Hospital based in Wolverhampton. Dr Mazzei started her work in the radiography profession as a volunteer as part of a therapy programme that was intended to help her control and manage a medical condition at the time. This demonstrated an early commitment to the profession that would become an important part of her later success.

Over the course of thirteen years Dr Mazzei’s dedication has allowed hr to develop from a radiography helper into an extremely talented band 8a clinical specialist sonographer, with her achievements being rightly recognised through the award.

Her colleague Shama Niazi nominated her for the award and commented that "Melanie is always striving to take up new challenges and has the ability to be extremely sensitive to patients.
“She considers radiography more than a job – it gave her hope and was vital in her own rehabilitation. Her story is a true inspiration to anyone and demonstrates what can be achieved in a profession that can open so many doors. A profession which was a lifeline is now benefiting from a highly motivated, dedicated individual who strives to provide excellent, patient-centered care in return.”

It is this dedication to patient care that helps Dr Mazzei stand out from the rest of the crowd and perfectly demonstrates the importance of proper personal care in addition to technical knowledge.

On receiving the award Dr Mazzei added “I’d like to say how honoured and shocked I am to receive the UK and Radiographer of the Year Award. I love being a sonographer – it’s not just a job, it’s a therapy and has played an important role in my health.
“There is never a day when I don't want to go to work. To be rewarded for this means so much to me and I’m grateful to have been given the opportunities that have enabled me to advance my career.”

She believes that the award will both help to promote the profession and its importance in the medical industry in addition to showing aspiring doctors that there are no limits to what you can achieve if you have the ambition.

The awards were sponsored by Carestream, which is a leading organisation in the field of medical film and digital imaging. Furthermore they were presented by a Carlie McCaffrey, who is a member of the Carestream team, and Harpal Kumar who is the CEO of Cancer Research UK.

We would like to extend our congratulations to Dr Mazzei and applaud her continued dedication to the professions of sonography and radiography.
