Radiographer Runs Half Marathon For Charity

A radiographer who works at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital has made a real effort to go the extra mile for her patients by taking part in a recent half marathon where all of the money she earns from sponsorships goes to benefiting a brand new breast cancer unit that will hopefully encourage more women in the area to go out and get screened.

Julianne Baker, who is also a mother of two children, ran the marathon on Sunday and managed to raise £235 for the breast unit that she works on, which should hopefully go towards new machinery and improved services at some point in the future.

The unit is a brand new initiative and is set to open a little later in the year, with the intention of providing additional treatment, support and information for the 600 people in Worcestershire who suffer from the ailment every single year.

Running the marathon showed an impressive level of dedication to the job on the part of Mrs Baker, who now can claim that she has helped patients in many more ways than simply as a radiographer.

As for sponsorship, despite the fact that the marathon is now completed, people still have the opportunity to lend some support and donate to the cause. In the race itself, Mrs Baker managed to achieve her personal best run with a time of two hours and four minutes, making the feat all the more impressive.

Mrs Baker splits her time in a variety of different hospitals in the Midlands and was justifiably proud with her achievement. She commented: "I'm delighted with my little achievement and I managed to raise £235 so far for the unit.

"I have worked for Hereford and Worcester Breast Screening for one year now. My team provide breast diagnostic examinations for both the NHS breast screening service and the symptomatic breast service.

"I believe the Worcester breast unit will provide a one stop dedicated unit for the women and men of Worcestershire with a united team delivering first class breast care all under one roof.

"The unit will provide rapid efficient assessment and care, treatment in welcoming and private surroundings, facilities that will help maximise the skills of our specialist teams, fewer return visits, space for complimentary therapies and support group meetings, counselling rooms for reflection and discussion, new clinical equipment and flexible space for use by support groups.

"I have always liked running and managed to run a few 5k runs over the last few years but I decided to push myself this year and aim for a half marathon.

"I found the training difficult to fit in with working full time for breast screening and having two children.

"Most of my training has been done at night around the roads of Kidderminster and on my £50 eBay treadmill when the weather was not so favourable."

We at Sonographers Medical would like to send our own congratulations out to Mrs Baker and we are sure that the money will go to a great cause. On a side note, anybody who would like to use their medical knowledge and expertise for the benefit of breast cancer patients should check out the radiography jobs that are currently hosted on the site. You never know, you may end up working with people just like the spectacular Mrs Baker!
