Hearing Group In Shrewsbury May Close Without New Chairperson

A special hearing support group based in Shrewsbury is under threat of closure unless they are able to find a new chairperson to help run the organisation at some point in the very near future.

The Shrewsbury Hard of Hearing Group currently provides support for around 45 members, with the main support being a loop system that is used by all of the members in addition to a text-to-screen system that allows a typist to write down the words that a speaker is using so that they can be displayed to the person watching the screen. This allows even those who have lost most or all of their hearing to continue to follow the conversation.

The group is considered something of a lifeline of support for the local community, offering companionship between people currently dealing with the same issues in addition to having a social aspect that many of the members find to be invaluable. Unfortunately, the group is currently in a situation where they have no chairperson to continue to help run their day-to-day operations, which could lead to the entire organisation having to close its doors unless the situation can be remedied.

The group currently holds monthly meetings at the United Reform Church Hall in Abbey Foregate, which is an excellent place to see the work the group does in terms of bringing members of the deaf community together to share in events. The meetings, which are usually held on the second Monday of each month, tend to feature a keynote speaker whose words will be conveyed to the participants using the loop or the text-to-screen systems mentioned previously.

After the talk, members of the group will be able to relax and enjoy a cup of tea and a chat, or take part in the raffle. New visitors are always welcomed.

The Shropshire RCC, in conjunction with the Audiology Department of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital are currently working to attract a new chairperson to the group who will be responsible for arranging the monthly meetings and attracting speakers as and when they are needed, alongside other administration and organisational tasks. Furthermore, they will be asked to attend six committee meetings every year to discuss the group and how it can be moved forward.

Anybody who may be interested in helping the group achieve its goals should contact Rachel Whitney on 01743 342163 or email shls@shropshire-rcc.org.uk.

You can also find out more about the group itself by heading to http://www.hearinglink.org/shrewsbury-hard-of-hearing-club and contacting them to get a little bit more information.
