Anybody with a shred of ambition will be interested in ways that they can speed up progression in their career. Unfortunately, it can often be difficult to determine the path that your career will take entirely on your own and you need to stay motivated and committed to the cause in order to achieve what you are looking for.

Thankfully, there are a few things that you can do to help speed up the situation in many cases, including all of the following.

Be Accountable

It is very easy to take the credit for something that goes right, but it is in taking the blame for something that falls on your shoulders and learning from the mistakes you made that show you are capable of progressing later on in your career.

Those who fail to hold themselves accountably, for both the positive and negative, cannot be trusted to take full responsibility for their current role, never mind a future one that requires them to take on even more responsibility. Make sure to be accountable for mistakes, but also make the effort to acknowledge your achievements.

Avoid Politics

A lot of people are under the mistaken impression that workplace politics plays a large role in who gets to move up the ladder. While it may be a small part of things, a good manager will be looking less for somebody who is constantly looking to get on their good side and more for people who are just looking to show they can do the job well.

Avoid politics as much as possible, as playing those games could blow up in your face and end up scuppering your chances for a promotion, especially if you are caught gossiping or spreading rumours.

Go Above and Beyond

Most employers and managers are looking for people who will put that extra little bit of effort in when needed, which means you have to up your game if you are going to get noticed. After all, if all you do is work on the tasks you have been given without showing any initiative or desire to do more, your manager may naturally think that you are working in the right role.

Instead, make sure to always seek out new work. Try to help out teammates wherever you can and show initiative by identifying issues that affect workflow and productivity. Of course, make sure that you also make an effort to come up with solutions to those problems.

Don’t Become Complacent

Even the most ambition person is in danger of becoming complacent in some circumstances. If the job you do is fairly easy, you may become comfortable doing it to the point where you stop looking for more. Others may have progressed as far as they can in their current job role and either have to settle or move on.

If you aim to progress, you should never settle. You should always be looking for ways to improve your station until you find the position that you want. Make plans and broaden your horizons in order to achieve what you are aiming for.
